David Bowie's fax to George Harrison
Dear George,
I hope it is not too late for
me to hop on the "Caning" bandwagon. I was inspired by your press statement
and I have 2 songs which I think would be appropiate. One would be a re-make
of my song "Fashion", which would comment on why they do it over there,
but they don't do it here, and the other would be a re-make of "Fame",
which of course was co-written by the late John Lennon. Enclosed are some
sample lyrics I have been working on. My only request is that you let me
bring my friend Rober t Fripp to the sessions.
Let me know if I can be of
service,
David Bowie.
"Cane Me!" (or Caning!)
There's a brand new phrase I've been saying alot.
(ooh wop, cane me!)
That kid with the spray paint deserved just what
he got. (ooh wop, caning!)
It's not just for vandals and it's not just for
queers. (ooh wop, caning!)
They do it over there and I wish we did it here.
(ooh wop caning!)
They do it if you spit your bubble gum on
the street. (ooh wop caning!)
They did it to Michael Fay, I hope they do it
to me. (oohwop cane me!)
"CANE!"
(Cane!), You will find sooner or later
(Cane!), Is the great public pursuader!
(Cane!), You'll be howling for Ralph Nadar
in...
PAIN!
(Cane!), Makes the laws easy to follow.
(Cane!), Don't attempt to spray paint limos.
(Cane!), You'll be screaming from the gallows
in...
PAIN!
